For many illustrators (and designers!), Adobe Illustrator is an invaluable tool—vector artwork is far easier to change and manipulate than raster. However, that flexibity has its limitations and sometimes you want to liven up your work with a bit of texture. In this class, we’ll explore ways to use both Illustrator and Photoshop in tandem by utilizing tools from custom brushes to Smart Objects.
The first part of the class with focus on concepting, sketching, placing sketches in Illustrator, tracing sketches, and creating custom art brushes in Illustrator. The second part will involve placing these vector components into Photoshop and adding textures non-destructively. What does that mean? You’ll still retain your original vector art in case you need to make changes because your textures won’t actually be integrated into the artwork. With masks and adjustments layers, you’ll never have to worry about making a change you can’t undo.
What You’ll Learn
Concepting. Brainstorm and sketch out your ideas.
Create vector artwork. Trace your sketches in Illustrator while carefully considering line and shape.
Custom brushes. Learn how to create custom art brushes in Illustrator and apply them to your vector artwork.
Textures. Create, scan, and manipulate various textures in Photoshop.
Move to Photoshop. Consider the best way to move your vector art into Photoshop—as a whole or piecemeal—and start applying your custom textures.
